How do we re-imagine the academic library's mission and resources in an age of generative AI tools? ChatGPT recommended titles for this article included:
After resisting the urge to let gen AI title and then compose this entire essay (delving into beautifully bullet-pointed lists organized by bolded subcategories), we decided to lean into the uncertainty and learning about this disruptive technology. We don't know how gen AI tools will evolve, or what sort of unanticipated consequences gen AI will produce, but we are committed to learning more about gen AI's biases and blind spots and opportunities, and to support the campus through discussions with all of you, and with our evolving Generative AI Resource Guide. We decided to compile many of the questions our department has been discussing around gen AI, including:
I've always considered myself a decent writer, and was in fact even a Language Arts teacher for a short period of my life, but I've never been terribly comfortable with blatant self-promotion. When it came time for my most recent job search, I found myself struggling with writing effective cover letters - actually, I was struggling to tell whether my cover letters were effective or not. I felt like I was addressing the relevant qualifications, but it was hard for me to evaluate whether I was doing an adequate job promoting myself. So I decided to ask chatGPT.Here's what I did: I gave chatGPT a copy of my resume and the job description and asked it to write a cover letter for me, and it did. It wasn't a particularly well-written cover letter and virtually none of it made it in to the final cover letter that I submitted, but it showed me a new way of organizing my thoughts so that I was focusing on the best I had to offer. It also reminded me how to make direct connections between the experiences I had listed in my resume and the requirements listed in the job description. I revised my own cover letter, synthesizing some of these new ideas and modifying some of my own previous ones. The end result was a more focused version of my own cover letter, and one that turned out strong enough to get me an interview. I would never recommend using chatGPT to write a cover letter FOR you, but as both a creative tool and revision tool, it can be very helpful in widening your perspective on your writing while also helping you focus in on what's most important. |
