Borrowing Services - For Students

Any current Highline student may check out library materials with appropriate Highline College ID. Inquire at the Circulation counter for information.

Highline College or CWU Des Moines ID is required to check out library materials. 

Print library materials and Media items, such as DVDs and compact discs, may be checked out at the Circulation counter (Plaza level).


Renewals may be requested in person (Circulation counter, Plaza level), over the telephone (206-592-3234), or online. You may renew an item a maximum of two times. If another patron has placed a Hold for that item you may not renew it. Telephone and online renewals must be completed before the current due date. Overdue items must be brought in to the library in person before a renewal can be granted.

To place a renewal request online, go to My Library Account  logon to your account, under "Loans" select "Renew or Renew all."

Materials Unavailable for Checkout

Reference materials, most Reserve items and items in the Legal Room are unavailable for use outside the library. You may use them in the library.

Can't Find It?

If you look up materials in the catalog that show as being "Available" but cannot find them, come to the Circulation counter and ask for assistance. If something is checked out, you may place a hold on it and we will notify you when it comes in.


Items on hand

Library items that circulate will be available at the Circulation Desk for up to three days.

Items not on hand

If a Hold request has been placed for an item not currently in the library, we will contact you when it becomes available and hold it at the Circulation Desk for up to three days. If the item is not picked up by the end of the third day, the request will expire and the item will be returned to its usual location.

Online Hold requests

Online Hold requests are processed the next business day after the Hold requests are placed.

Overdue Materials

If you receive an overdue notice for a library item, please return or renew it in person. If you are sure that the item has been returned, or you have lost library materials, please call or come in to the Library.

There are no fines for overdue materials. However, if any items are not returned, you will receive a bill for replacement costs and processing fees for each overdue item, also, your ability to register for classes or transfer transcripts will be blocked.

Lost Materials and Charges

If you do not renew or return materials, we will assume the materials are lost. If you return the items you will not be charged any fees or fines. If you do not return the items you will be charged a non-refundable $20.00 per item processing fee as well as the cost of replacing the materials.  Unresolved library charges may affect your ability to register for future classes. If, after paying your fees, you find the items within 60 days of payment, the replacement charge can be refunded, but not the $20.00 processing fee.
