Global Community Initiative: Health and Wellbeing: Home
This guide was developed to support Highline College's Global Community Initiative (GCI). During the 2021-22 academic year, the GCI is focusing on UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
"As the United States sets new records for COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations, we speak with one of the world’s leading experts on infectious diseases, Dr. Paul Farmer, who says the devastating death toll in the U.S. reflects decades of underinvestment in public health and centuries of social inequality. “All the social pathologies of our nation come to the fore during epidemics,” says Dr. Farmer."
2008 documentary: "UNNATURAL CAUSES sounds the alarm about the extent of our glaring socio-economic and racial inequities in health and searches for their root causes. But those causes are not what we might expect. While we pour more and more money into drugs, dietary supplements and new medical technologies, UNNATURAL CAUSES crisscrosses the country investigating the findings that are shaking up conventional understanding of what really makes us healthy or sick."
Monitoring health inequalities is crucial to identify differences in health between different population subgroups. This provides evidence on who is being left behind and informs health policies, programmes and practices that aim to close existing gaps and achieve health equity. The WHO Health Equity Monitor provides evidence on existing health inequalities and makes available tools and resources for health inequality monitoring.
This project "reveals county-level variations in vulnerability indexes and COVID-19 data across the United States, but also visualizes the impact of each dataset on the geographic allocation of public health resources. Simulating this vision as a real-world scenario, the website queries each user on what factors should be used to define a community in need and, consequently, prioritized in terms of access to public health resources."
“A gold open access journal that covers all aspects of global health with a focus on disadvantaged populations, be they whole economic regions or marginalised groups within otherwise prosperous nations.”
Our Mission is to promote policies and support programs that strengthen government primary health care and foster social, economic, and health equity for all. Our Vision is a just world that promotes health and well-being, including universal access to quality health care.
Washington Global Health Alliance WGHA connects and informs the global health community, creating a culture of collaboration among members to increase their impact in the world. We envision a global health community that fulfills its greatest collective potential for achieving global health equity.
"At PATH, we are a global team of innovators working to accelerate health equity so all people and communities can thrive. We advise and partner with public institutions, businesses, grassroots groups, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges.”
“ PRONTO International aims to optimize care during birth. We develop and implement innovative training strategies that act as a catalyst for health care providers to make individual, team, and systems changes.”
