From Brightly - Raising Kids Who Love to Read. #OwnVoices stemmed from a viral hashtag created by author and educator Corrine Duyvis (http://www.corinneduyvis.net/ownvoices/). Both a descriptor and its own publishing-multicultural representative movement, #OwnVoices is "a useful shorthand for books with diverse characters that are written by people who share those identities, and it’s been widely embraced within the kid lit community." Many believe that this movement in more equitable publishing representation of cross-cultural (race, ability, language, gender, nationality etc...) authors reflecting their characters is long overdue. #OwnVoices at large seeks to prioritize and credit authors of diverse backgrounds writing from their own experiences providing more richly nuanced and authentic narratives without tropes or stereotypes.
