Stanley P. Owens Native American Collection
In 1997, Stanley Owen donated his unique and extensive Native American collection to the Highline Community College Foundation and the Highline Community College Library. This collection consists of approximately 3,000 items including music, games, videos, puzzles, calendars, drawings and prints as well as over 2,400 volumes of books. Topics covered in the collection include archeology, anthropology, history, botany and herbals, linguistics and languages, biography, poetry and fiction, arts and crafts, photographic collections, religion and spirituality, legends and more.
Mr. Owen has been collecting Native American items since 1962. Living in Alberta Canada at that time, he became interested in problems facing Native Americans in Canada. this interest turned into compassion and concern for the plight of all Native Americans. His position as a head scientist in a laboratory at the UpJohn Company necessitated frequent domestic and international travel. While traveling he was able to research and purchase items for his collection.
A $5,000 gift was received from the Muckleshoot Charity Fund to help pay for cataloging and displaying the collection. Most of the items have been processed and are available to be checked out.
A display of some of the more unique and rare items are periodically on display in the Library Exhibition and Art Gallery located on the fourth floor of the Highline Community College Library. The other 2000 plus items are shelved throughout the library and may be located by using the library
catalog.
